Which Tom Beckbe Jacket Is Right For You?

Jemison Thorsby

“Which jacket should I get?” Probably the number one question we receive in our Birmingham, AL, Oxford, MS, and Tuscaloosa, AL stores. Knowing that many of you are far from those three stores and wondering the same thing, here’s a quick overview of our different men’s waxed canvas jackets and waxed canvas vests. For each jacket, we’ve tried to answer these four questions:

  1. Why did Tom Beckbe make this jacket?
  2. Who is the jacket designed for?
  3. Where are these jackets most commonly worn?
  4. How does it fit?

Tensaw Jacket

Why: The very first Tom Beckbe product made and still our best seller, we designed the Tensaw Jacket to be functional, stylish, and uniquely American. We wanted a jacket that was rugged enough to work as a true hunting jacket but also stylish enough to wear to the office and around town. The result of that effort was the Tensaw. It has a distinctive silhouette with set-in sleeves and a standing collar. Constructed from a waxed shelter cloth, we have been manufacturing Tensaws in the United States since 2015.

Who: Originally designed for discerning sportsmen who wanted to buck the trend of jackets from familiar names made in far off places, the Tensaw has fans who never venture into the field but enjoy its rugged utility and style.

Where: Named for one of the five rivers that comprise the fabled Mobile-Tensaw Delta in lower Alabama, the Tensaw Jacket is at home in a duck blind, walking open prairies in fall, on horseback, at your local watering hole, and during a morning commute.

Fit: The Tensaw has our trademark classic fit, which sits right between the relaxed, baggy fits of yesterday and slim / tailored fits. The Tensaw is designed to be flattering but not restrictive, with gusseted underarms and a bi-swing back with a length that hits mid-thigh.

Piedmont Jacket

Why: The Piedmont shares a body style with the Tensaw but has a lighter three-season, weatherproof 6oz waxed cotton shell and folded collar. We designed the Piedmont to have a classic look and length similar to the Tensaw but in a lighter fabric for everyday, three-season wear. Make no mistake, though, the Piedmont is a true sporting jacket loaded with all of the technical details and rugged features that our heavier jackets have.

Who: Sportsmen who live in milder climates and anyone looking for the distinctive look and feel of a classic field coat in an easy-wearing, everyday jacket.

Where: The Piedmont is named for the upland region of the American South, where the coastal alluvial plain that stretches from east Texas to southern Virginia gives way to rolling hills and a mixture of hardwoods and longleaf pines. Our Piedmont Jacket is ideally suited for Southern quail hunts, oyster roasts, and other cold weather affairs.

Fit: The Piedmont Jacket is slightly more tailored through the midsection when compared to the Tensaw, but otherwise has the same fit. The Piedmont’s folded collar is the most noticeable style difference from the Tensaw.

Paddock Quilted Jacket

Why: New for Fall 2024, we developed the Paddock Jacket to offer an insulated jacket that married the technical performance of our popular Fowler Jacket with the easy-wearing, everyday silhouette of our best-selling Piedmont Jacket. Insulated with 100 gsm of HD Wool, the Paddock has a weatherproof 5.5oz waxed cotton shell that has a soft hand with a classic finish.

Who: Anyone who appreciates a classic waxed cotton jacket and wants the added warmth of wool insulation.

Where: The Paddock is rugged enough for country life but equally comfortable around town.

Fit: The Paddock Jacket has a classic fit that is more tailored in the chest, shoulders, and body than our other outerwear styles. If you already own a Tom Beckbe jacket and fill it out, take the next size up in the Paddock Jacket.

Shallowford Jacket

Why: A classic mid-length jacket with a waxed shelter cloth shell, we introduced the Shallowford for folks who wanted the same overall fit as a Tensaw in a shorter length. Waterfowlers will recognize the length and fit as the traditional style of wading jacket popular in the sport.

Who: Waxed cotton jackets have a long and storied relationship with waterfowlers, given the sport’s immersion in cold and wet environments. The Shallowford Jacket is ideally suited for wading and gunning in those conditions. Outside of the sporting realm, the Shallowford’s mid-length appeals to folks who like the fit and mobility of a Tensaw in a shorter package.

Where: Shallowfords work great wading in waterfowl habitat and cold trout streams. They have a smart, rugged look that lends themselves well to a casual night out.

Fit: The Shallowford Jacket has a classic fit. Sitting just below the waist, it is slightly shorter than a Tensaw Jacket and a bit longer and fuller in the waist than a Chatom Jacket.

Chatom Jacket

Why: The Chatom is our riff on the classic ranch jacket of the American West. Made with 8.25oz weatherproof waxed shelter cloth, the Chatom separates itself from run-of-the-mill ranch jackets with our hallmark attention to detail, an exceptional fit, and technical features, like a bi-swing back, that provide comfort and mobility.

Who: Outdoorsmen who prefer a jacket with a shorter, trimmer silhouette without trading comfort and mobility.

Where: Drawing inspiration from the classic look of the American West, the Chatom Jacket is equally at home on the ranch and in a hunting blind.

Fit: Our shortest, trimmest jacket, the Chatom sits right at the waist.

Fowler Jacket

Why: The Fowler Jacket thrives when the thermometer plunges. We designed the Fowler Jacket directly in response to customer requests for an insulated waxed jacket for the coldest of weather. Quilted with revolutionary HD Wool, the Fowler marries the natural thermal regulating properties of wool with the original weatherproof fabric – waxed shelter cloth. Oversized handwarmer pockets lined with moleskin and an insulated, removable hood complete the ultimate winter jacket for the discerning sportsman.

Who: Made for winter outdoor enthusiasts, the Fowler is perfect for cold, nasty weather. Ideal for anyone who enjoys being outside in winter and appreciates the natural performance of wool and waxed canvas.

Where: As the name suggests, the Fowler was designed initially for the coldest days in a duck blind. But the Fowler’s natural warmth and technical features offer universal appeal for anyone braving the cold.

Fit: The Fowler Jacket has a classic fit very similar to the Shallowford. Sitting just below the waist, the Fowler is slightly shorter than a Tensaw Jacket. Sizing has been adjusted to account for the wool insulation, so you can take the same size as your other Tom Beckbe jackets.

Fowler Vest

Why: Layered properly, a vest might be the most versatile outerwear piece in your closet. We made the Fowler Vest as a warmer compliment to our acclaimed Kinsman Vest. Quilted with revolutionary HD Wool, the Fowler Vest marries the natural thermal regulating properties of wool with the original weatherproof fabric – waxed shelter cloth. Oversized handwarmer pockets lined with moleskin and an insulated, removable hood complete the ultimate winter vest for the discerning sportsman.

Kinsman Vest

Why: The second product we made, the Kinsman was designed as a dependable compliment to the Tensaw Jacket for milder days. Made with a weatherproof 6oz waxed cotton shell, the Kinsman sheds water and busts brush with the best of them. Stylish, warm, and comfortable, the Kinsman Vest was a finalist in Garden & Gun’s Made in the South Awards the year it debuted. Ever since, the Kinsman has put in work on quail plantations across the South.

Who: Designed for anyone who knows and appreciates the rugged durability of waxed canvas, the Kinsman’s versatile design and style has made it popular among true sportsmen and anyone who appreciates the distinctive patina that waxed cotton develops through years of wear and care.

Where: The Kinsman is a wonderful addition for milder climates where it can be enjoyed for three seasons. Kinsman Vests are right at home in the field, where they work as true sporting vests, and also as casual pieces that can be worn around town.

Fit: The Kinsman has a traditional vest fit, slightly trimmer than our outerwear with a length that sits right at the waist.
